Romania 2024 Salina Turda
Turda, Romania – 2024. Salina Turda is a salt mine a short distance from the city of Turda, the second largest city in Cluj County, northwest Transylvania. Records indicate that salt mining at the site started sometime around the 11th–13th centuries and commercial mining activity ended in 1932 and the mine was abandoned. During the Second World War the mine was used as an air raid shelter and in the 1950’s to store cheese products. In 1992 the mine was opened to the public and after extensive upgrading was reopened as a major tourist destination in 2010. In addition to a museum and displays of mining equipment there is also an amusement park, an underground lake, a spa and wellness center and above ground salty lakes for swimming.
